A beautiful tour of the South Street Seaport in New York. The South Street Seaport is a historic area in the New York City borough of Manhattan, located where Fulton Street meets the East River, and adjacent to the Financial District. The Seaport is a designated historic district, distinct from the neighboring Financial District. It features some of the oldest architecture in downtown Manhattan, and includes the largest concentration of restored early 19th-century commercial buildings in the city. This includes renovated original mercantile buildings, renovated sailing ships, the former Fulton Fish Market, and modern tourist malls featuring food, shopping and nightlife, with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge. At the entrance to the Seaport is the Titanic Memorial lighthouse. Designated by Co...

one of my favorite bands from the 90s graced the 15th Seaport Music Festival. They still have the energy and drive as they did 20 years ago awesome
So changed from its previous earthiness, Fulton Market now advertises people, not fish.
We are at the home of interior designer Rebecca Robertson. Rebecca and her husband purchased this industrial loft space in South Street Seaport and renovated the entire building for luxury living. Rebecca created a comfortable living space for her and her family, while incorporating the repurposed and renewed industrial materials.
This month we visit the South Street Seaport Museum as we celebrate New York's Historic Museums. Located within a landmark district that features some of the oldest architecture in Lower Manhattan, the Seaport Museum offers a glimpse into early 19th-century New York as well as spotlighting art, trade and manufacturing that existed throughout the harbor. Since 1967, the Museum has presented collections and stories on the seaport's colorful history and has recently reopened as part of the Museum of the City of New York, giving the organization a renewed energy with vibrant displays of historic and contemporary works. When visiting the area don't forget the ships! The Seaport Museum has a great collection including the Pioneer, an 1885 schooner and the 1908 lightship Ambrose, a National Hi...

In March 2016 the steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales, were threatened with closure. 700 people were made immediately redundant and reports suggested another 15,000 jobs, in a town of just 45,000, could be affected. Port Talbot was set to become a ghost town. In the midst of the uncertainty and limbo, a father of four Nigel Hunt – who had already lost his steelworker job of 10 years – begins building a new future with a colourful start-up business, in the most polluted city in the UK. With no investment, or disposable income, the stakes are high but some unexpected turns lead Nigel to a new path, away from the fire and furnace, which he never could have dreamed of. The Skyscraper Museum presents: James Lindgren Book Talk Preserving South Street Seaport (NYU Press, 2014) Wednesday, March 2, 2016 6:30-8 pm In Preserving South Street Seaport James Lindgren tells the story of the South Street Seaport, a landmarked historic district that is home to the largest concentration of early 19th-century mercantile buildings in the city, a maritime museum with a (shrinking) fleet of renovated sailing ships, and a modern urban festival market, a retail, entertainment, and tourist destination once more in the process of redevelopment. Focusing on the history of the past half century, Lindgren explains how preservationists mobilized in 1966 to save the last piece of lower Manhattan’s old port and how urban renewal plans by the City failed to find a formula that co...
A full half-hour of the imrpov flash mob* that everyone but me seemed to know about. It was a pleasant turnout for only wanting to walk to the pier. Again, please excuse my poor cameramanship., as always, this was recorded on my iPod. *MISNOMER: An Improv Flash Mob is NOT the same as a regular flash mob. A regular flash mob tends to consist of many dancing, while an Improv Flash Mob can consist of any unisonized acts done by many people. The entirety of the video can be a bit long and boring between the acts, so if you care to cut to the interesting parts, they are as follows: -3:48 Sea of Maps -6:04 Spotting Waldo -9:12 DO THE WAVE! -16:32 Parade of Paper Airplanes -18:23 Grab your partner for a slow dance -19:15 CONGA LINE! -24:07 Red Flag Finale Part 1 -25:54 Red Flag Finale Part 2 ...

Manhattan is divided broadly into three sections: Downtown, Midtown, and Uptown. In common parlance locally, to go "Downtown" in Manhattan means to "go south", while going "Uptown" means to "go north". The districts located south of 14th St are considered part of Downtown. Midtown, as the name suggests, occupies the approximate middle reach of Manhattan Island, sandwiched between 14th St and 59th St / Central Park. Midtown is divided into a number of neighborhoods, often indistinct with considerable overlap between them. The districts located north of 59th St are considered part of Uptown. Lower Manhattan Long the center of the American economy, the Financial District is full of impressive turn-of-the-century buildings and is a hive of activity during the day. At night it clears out c...
I am happy to present an episode of the "Sustainable Planet" tv show I produced and hosted between 2001 en 2008. This episode was shot at the South Street Seaport museum and had as the inroad for the story the Red Star Line shipping company that departed from Antwerp, my hometown - to set route for Ellis Island. Some 3 million immigrants came to America through the gateway Antwerp and Eugeen Van Mieghem - a painter whose mother had a cafe right in front of the boarding docks - immortalized a lot of them on his canvases. This episode entails a private tour with the curator of the Antwerp Eugene Van Mieghem Museum - Erwin Joos - and invites the viewer to walk the same path as the immigrants of the 19th and early 20th century,
When they say,
I've watched them break
It happens to the best of us
They meant the ones before
With empty words and empty thought
I'm gonna make something more
Of myself than contradiction
That's what you've been waiting for
Well you can fucking wait
When we break every standard that you set
In our way
What have you got next?
What did you expect from us?
There's certain things that even time can't change
